Between Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, at least 32 people were killed in Lebanon, following a series of explosions of wireless communication devices such as pagers and walkie-talkies, and more than 300 people were injured, including maimed limbs.

This is the preliminary balance that international media have given about the new strategy of the Israeli government to confront one of its archenemies, the extremist Hezbollah party, which also receives support from Iran. The whole process began around 3:30 pm Lebanese time last Tuesday. Suddenly, the pagers that Hezbollah leaders had acquired began to explode. These devices had found their way into the hands of militants of the political party to replace the traditional cell phones, to avoid interceptions by Israeli intelligence.

As reported by The New York Times, Israeli intelligence officials saw in this change of devices an opportunity to strike a blow against their archenemies. Israel then "Israel had put into motion a plan to establish a shell company that would pose as an international pager producer,” informed the daily.

"Its pagers were far from ordinary. Produced separately, they contained batteries laced with the explosive PETN," according to intelligence agents consulted by The New York Times. And that was how the operation was carried out, which had a second day this Wednesday, when a new series of explosions began, but this time of walkie-talkies, which added new victims to the balance of dead and wounded already mentioned.

The use of technology, deception and espionage strategies has been common throughout the history of the State of Israel. It is worth remembering the episodes derived from the Munich massacre that even had their development in a movie directed by Steven Spielberg and the spectacular capture of the Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann in 1962 in Argentina.

Tensions in the Middle East are still present and have been aggravated by the development of the Israeli war against Hamas, after the massacre of October 7, 2023, perpetrated by this extremist group against Israeli citizens.

After this new chapter, what is to be expected is the reaction of the attacked party. The Israeli strategy has been lethal, but it also reminds us that, as in any conflict, the violent response of the extremist faction will now escalate.
